Overall, I think my workflow of citation management improved. I can restrict what folders are backed up online so I don’t use up all of my space (2GB currently).Which papers mention game theory? It’s easy to look up I find this helpful because I do a lot of paper reading on my tablet. A useful app that lets me save a PDF annotated in Adobe reader as a separate file.Generally effective importing of references directly from the browser window.I can select multiple entries to change a single field (very handy for conferences). I eventually settled on Mendeley for the following reasons: I tried out Zotero for a while but found it lacking (perhaps more on that in a future post). This year, I started looking for an alternative. This wasn’t a huge problem, but it was inconvenient to need to proxy through a campus server just to access my references. The website was behind a subscription wall associated with my institution. The website wasn’t responsive, and it was actually kind of clunky to look up papers and export Bibtex files.Eventually, some minor annoyances piled up: I was using RefWorks for citation management during grad school. Ability to select what types of entries include the URL (instead of only webpages)įirst, here’s some background on how I came to using Mendeley.Constraints on what you can write in the “year” field. Some of these problems haven’t been officially fixed for over 6 years! In this post I will share some code that addresses these problems, including: You can find many reports of these problems, including the Mendeley support page. bib extension) are used to add your references to papers compiled in LaTeX. I used to use BibDesk, and have played around with Jabref (which I like because they both store the library as a bib file, which you can edit by hand if you want), but Zotero has a better/larger support/community, and integration (primarily the very useful browser toolbar button for importing a reference easily).Mendeley is a popular citation manager but it doesn’t properly export bibtex files. I'm not super excited about the Zotero library format not being bib(la)tex-based, since it isn't easy to edit by hand afaik, but exporting to a bibfile with Better BibTeX really does seem to work well. It's not perfect, but it works pretty well. I version-track that file with git, and I keep a backup that way on GitHub (this way I can also use the bib file in Overleaf projects, by syncing the bib file from that git repo). For about a year and a half, I've been using Zotero with the crucial Better BibTeX plugin, and simply have it auto-export my whole library to a Bib(La)TeX file. Personally (and also like the OP) I'm really only interested in using a citation manager for maintaining a master bib file for TeX projects. If you just want to build a database of web documents with their info, go with Zotero. So if you are willing to dive deeply into the techie details, I suggest JabRef. (It took me years to find that shortcut!) I use Notepad to open the bib file, fix the error, and resave. If it gives me an error message when compiling, the line number is included in the error message. If I have capitalization problems, so far that can be solved by careful use of braces or double braces. Now I use that LaTex markup in the author field, and I use Schroedinger in the LastName_FirstWordinTitle_Year string in the Bibtexkey that calls the database entry from the text. I did have some difficulty deciding how to enter author names such as Schr\"dinger. I have done all of these and more, and also changed to the Biblatex version. In JabRef I can define new types of document entries, change the fields included in an entry type, and define new output formats for a reference list. Zotero is good to get the info from the web for you if it is available, but customization is limited. I have over 4000 documents of various types in Zotero but moved the entire database to JabRef and no longer use Zotero.
